چکیده

The introduction of alien species, which are also called exotic or non-native species, can cause a decrease in biotic similarity among areas when different species are introduced to each area and remain localized, a process called biotic differentiation (Olden & Poff, 2003; Qian et al., 2008). However, over time, alien species often spread widely and cause an increase in biotic similarity among different areas, a process called biotic homogenization (Olden & Poff, 2003; McKinney, 2004; Rooney et al., 2004). Furthermore, the introduction of the same species to different areas and the extinction or extirpation of localized native species can also cause biotic homogenization. By definition, biotic homogenization will lead to a Research and Collections Center, Illinois State Museum, Springfield, IL 62703, USA, USDA-Southern Research Station, Asheville, NC 28804, USA

Forecasting faunal and floral homogenization associated with human population geography in North America

Human population and urbanization is unprecedented in its rate of growth and geographic scope. With the help of humans, exotic species have piggybacked their way to distant lands, which in combination with the loss of endemic native species, has led to the convergence of biological communities toward common and ubiquitous forms. However, the extent to which this ‘‘biotic homogenization’’ varies...

Release from foliar and floral fungal pathogen species does not explain the geographic spread of naturalized North American plants in Europe

1. During the last centuries many alien species have established and spread in new regions, where some of them cause large ecological and economic problems. As one of the main explanations of the spread of alien species, the enemy-release hypothesis is widely accepted and frequently serves as justification for biological control. 2. We used a global fungus–plant host distribution data set for 1...

Naturalization of European plants on other continents: The role of donor habitats.

The success of European plant species as aliens worldwide is thought to reflect their association with human-disturbed environments. However, an explicit test including all human-made, seminatural and natural habitat types of Europe, and their contributions as donor habitats of naturalized species to the rest of the globe, has been missing. Here we combine two databases, the European Vegetation...

Non-naturalized alien plants receive fewer flower visits than naturalized and native plants in a Swiss botanical garden

Many animal-pollinated plant species have been introduced to non-native regions without their usual pollinators. Nevertheless, some of these alien species managed to establish reproducing naturalized populations, which might negatively affect native plants. Recent studies have shown that many naturalized alien species can readily attract native pollinators. However, it is not known whether alie...

Comparative Patterns of Plant Invasions in the Mediterranean Biome

The objective of this work was to compare and contrast the patterns of alien plant invasions in the world's five mediterranean-climate regions (MCRs). We expected landscape age and disturbance history to have bearing on levels of invasion. We assembled a database on naturalized alien plant taxa occurring in natural and semi-natural terrestrial habitats of all five regions (specifically Spain, I...
